ACCAE - Award Winners for 2001

Excellence in Product Design - Susan Corbin, Paperchain, Halifax, NS

This Nova Scotia business was first started in 1992 by a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design. She has created a commercially viable product which also meets the most demanding standards of creativity and visual innovation. The product line, which includes earrings, brooches, greeting cards and matted images, is a liberal outpouring of this artistŐs creativity and individuality.

The artistŐs choice of materials for this particular medium further enhances her workmanship and casual style, and has set her apart as a leader in product design for this reason.

Outstanding Exporter - Ray & Delia Will, Delia Pewter - Paradise, NF

This company started over 20 years ago making jewellery for their local markets and getting their main inspiration from the land and sea around them. The rich natural textures and designs have helped this business grow into an export success story, with only a small portion of their sales staying within their home province. Today they export over 90% of their product line outside Atlantic Canada.

This producer has expanded their initial market of jewellery, to include home fashions, office designs, table top fountains, and much more, most with a sea life theme. The exceptional quality, eye for detail, and commitment to business has maintained this companyŐs standing since 1978, and will continue on for many years.

Outstanding Retailer - The Craft Council Shop, Craft Council of Newfoundland & Labrador - St. John's, NF

In 1992, this business sold the work of 30 to 40 craft members, and the retail selling space was a mere 150 square feet. Each year the shop grew. One year the increase was as much as 80%. The number of craft producers now selling products there is more than 171 members.

The selling space has increased to 860 square feet. All craft work is juried and only the highest quality workmanship is accepted. Standards for design, technique and materials are high and shop staff are friendly and knowledgeable, making any visit to the shop a unique and satisfying experience. Each purchase from the shop is accompanied by an artist profile as well as directions about how to care for your craft item.

Shop staff know about the producers and products they represent and use this information as a selling tool. Customers leave the shop with a feeling of being somewhere true and sincere. This shop strikes the perfect balance between providing support and guidance to craft producers, and meeting the needs of its customers.

Industry Leader/Supporter - The P.E.I. Crafts Council, Charlottetown, PE

This organization was first formed in 1965, and incorporated in 1975, a non-profit organization with a mandate to promote the making and acceptance of quality handcrafted items through the provision of programs and services.
